EDMONTON POLICE SERVICE TRAFFIC CARD

The Edmonton Police Service in partnership with Deaf and Hear Alberta have developed a new tool to help police officers and drivers with hearing loss communicate more effectively with one another.

This image shows a visor card created by Edmonton Police Service and Deaf & Hear Alberta to help Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or Speech Impaired drivers communicate with police during traffic stops or emergencies.

Left Side (Red) – “I Am Deaf or Hard of Hearing”

  • Provides communication tips for officers (e.g., speak clearly, reduce noise, be patient)

  • Lists the driver’s preferred ways to communicate: verbally, writing, texting, lip-reading, assistive devices, or interpreter

  • Includes a contact number for Deaf & Hear Alberta for interpreter support

  • Meant to be kept in the vehicle for quick access

Right Side (Blue) – Officer Communication Aid

  • Lets officers point to what they need to see: license, registration, insurance, etc.

  • Lists common traffic violations using icons

  • Indicates whether the driver is being warned, ticketed, or arrested

  • Includes icons for different types of help (medical, towing, lost, gas, etc.)

This card is designed to reduce confusion and improve safety and communication for both drivers and officers.
